I participated in an Ambassador program on behalf of Influence Central for Pernix Therapeutics. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Are you tired? Do you suffer from insomnia? Then you’re one of roughly four million Americans who do. And if you have trouble staying asleep, you’re in good company with about half of Americans!

There are ways to get a good night’s sleep — you just have to follow healthy shut-eye strategies to do so. One major way is to sign off from social media at last one hour before bedtime (no more Instagram while I’m lying in bed!). But there are other shut-eye strategies you can try as well:

Exercise early in the day. Working out early can strengthen your circadian rhythm, which actually helps make you sleepier at night.

Get comfy. You need to let your body know that it’s time to settle down for bedtime. Try some relaxing activities, such as taking a warm, soothing bath, to help you transition from daytime to bedtime.

Make your bedroom dark. Keep out the light. Light (and darkness) are natural signals to your brain, telling you to rest or wake up. When you want to sleep, be sure you keep it dark.

Sign off! Sign off from social media and put your phones away an hour before bedtime. The LED lights from your devices can activate the brain, which will help you from falling asleep, and staying asleep.

A full, uninterrupted night of sleep has positive benefits — it affects immune function, memory, and other vital functions. I’m a big fan of a full, uninterrupted night of sleep, so I will be signing off from social media (and my devices) one hour before bedtime.

Now, I know it won’t be easy to sign off, especially since using my devices has become a bedtime routine for me. I often surf on my iPad, read on my Kindle, and use social media on my iPhone while lying in bed. So cutting all those activities from my bedtime routine will be a major adjustment, but I’m going to give it a shot. Promise!

If you’re struggling with getting to sleep — and staying asleep — which shut-eye strategies are you willing to try? Learn more about how to achieve a full, uninterrupted night’s sleep and see how it works for you! I’m going to try my social media sign-off starting tonight (uh oh, I’m already dreading it!) and see how it turns out. I’ll let you know!
