Welcome to the 2015 Spring Fashionista Event!
I am so excited about Fashionista — and I am super excited about our Fashionista sponsor, YB Green Jewelry. I’m not just excited because it’s jewelry, mind you. I’m excited about YB Green. Are you ready for something really exciting?
Yasmin is the founder of YB Green® upcycled glass jewelry. In 2009, Yasmin was living in New Orleans and discovered that she couldn’t recycle glass with the city. New Orleans stopped recycling glass after Hurricane Katrina so she started recycling her own.
Soon after, Yasmin began to collect glass from her neighborhood so she could make jewelry with it. She collects every bottle, scrap and shard of glass that she finds. All glass used in her jewelry creations is 100% recycled by Yasmin, not purchased.
The glass is cleaned and sterilized, then it’s cut and melted using various techniques. It takes Yasmin at least 24 hours to transform and upcycle the glass into something special. By wearing YB Green’s upcycled glass jewelry, you help raise awareness about recycling. Her family remained in New Orleans, so she will always have the ability to collect glass from the city to make jewelry.
But New Orleans isn’t the only source of her upcycled glass jewelry. Yasmin created a European collection called “Halle” using glass she found in abandoned properties and the Silvester celebrations in Amsterdam and Germany. She named the collection after the city of Halle, Germany, which became the most blighted city following the Cold War.
Artists have begun using empty buildings in Halle as canvases for beautiful murals. Like those artists, Yasmin believes in using art to address environmental issues. Her ultimate mission is to highlight different stories and communities by creating upcycled glass jewelry from these places. While YB Green will always be rooted in New Orleans, there is a branch in Halle, Germany, and the next will be in Washington, D.C.
I’m excited about YB Green Jewelry for a few reasons. I like the idea of recycled or upcycled glass jewelry. It has a positive environmental effect. That’s pretty cool. And glass is a very interesting medium for jewelry. I mean, come on. That’s also pretty cool. But the glass is from New Orleans? Like, the most fascinating city in the country (I’m sure I’ll get letters for that)? Yes, please! I want a piece of New Orleans to carry with me. It’s special. And, the fact that New Orleans didn’t recycle glass following Hurricane Katrina? It’s just so bizarre, and so interesting, how YB Green Jewelry came to be.
But there’s also glass being upcycled from Germany, where about half of my family hails from, so I’m pretty interested in that as well. And Yasmin is going to be using upcycled glass from Washington, D.C.? I’ve always been so fascinated by the Capitol, which has always had a special place in my heart.
For all these reasons, YB Green Jewelry sets itself apart from the rest. Any one aspect of YB Green makes it special, but all of these aspects? They make it hard to compare. Oh, and the jewelry! The jewelry is just cool. It’s different, and unique, and so pretty. So distinctive. Definitely pieces that will make people ask you about it. Those are the pieces I love. I think you’ll love it, too.
OK, OK, let’s get on to her amazing upcycled glass jewelry. Yasmin has generously offered one of my readers a pair of green glass bead earrings and a matching necklace! The glass comes from Cologne.
The glass in the earrings is 1 1/4″ long and 1/4″ wide. The sterling silver findings and earhook are 3/4″ at their longest point and 1/4″ high. They retail for $85.
