Dawn is pretty awesome stuff. Sure, you know Dawn Dish Soap works great on your dishes. But were you aware there were other uses for Dawn, beyond the sink? Like using Dawn to clean greasy tools. Yes indeed.

Over the past few months, we’ve been hitting garage sales, mainly for the purpose of building our tool collection. (When I say “our,” mind you, it involves me basically because it’s in the house. That’s pretty much where it begins and ends.) Sometimes we find tools in meticulous condition. Other times, not so much. Mechanics! (Calm down, I’m just kidding.)

We found this set of speed wrenches (minus the 5/8″ wrench — boo!) at a garage sale recently and snatched it up, since the asking price was only $20. Woot! A couple of the wrenches were pretty grungy, as you can see.

Ick. They needed to be cleaned. Badly.

Now, you can find about 172 different methods on how to clean greasy tools. And it seems like every single one of them includes covering your hand tools in heavy duty cleaners. Some recommend soaking your tools in cleaner. There are actually tool cleaning products, that boast cleaning and degreasing properties. (Not only are they full of chemicals, they’re not cheap, either.) I don’t think any of those sound like the best ideas.

As it turns out, an alternative use is using Dawn to clean greasy tools. Filthy, greasy tools. So we figured we’d take a crack at using Dawn Dish Beyond the Sink.

All you need to do is add a teaspoon of Dawn to a gallon of hot water.

Then use a rag (or a sponge, your call) and scrub away the grease on your hand tools (and whatever else is caked on them).

wrenches get it the worst, you have to clean them after you use them when working on any motor, cuz of grease and oil and dirt.

  2. Linda Szymoniak says

I’d have to say any automotive tool in my tool box. There’s just something about the grease you get on everything whenever you work on a car.

  3. Carrie M says

Wrenches are the hardest to clean (which I have to do every time I use them). I swear my husband dips them in grease every time he uses them.

  4. DEBRA GIFFORD says

I am no mechanic and rarely have a need for tools but I am trying to win this for my son. For him, I’d say that he finds it most difficultt to clean his wrenches.

  5. Debra S says

MY tools are clean! LOL It’s the guy’s stuff in the garage that is gross.. Yup, they only wipe them off with rags. They need more than that. ONE of the sons seems to do something right, but my husband.. oh boy HIS tools need Dawn.

  6. Clare Short says

My hardest tool to clean would be all of my kitchen stuff, since I do most of the cooking, those are my “tools”. The stuck on, baked on gunk….:)

  7. Kelly Nicholson says

Leave a comment telling us your hardest tool to clean.

well i hate slippery screw drivers…im talking about tools here..anot the other one

  8. says

The hardest tool for me to keep clean would have to be our long-nosed pliers. I also use Dawn to wash my makeup brushes, paint brushes, and all my baking supplies (ie. cookie cutters).

  9. Michael Mayhew says

I would say my wrenches are toughest to clean.Lots of grease get on them and I don’t clean them that great to often.

  10. Angela A Simmons says

The hardest tools for me to clean are the ones that I use to tune up my car. Yes I am a women and I do my own tune ups on my 1971 Cutlass 😉

  11. Kevin says

If you don’t take care of your tools, even cleaning them, they won’t last. I’d say wenches are the hardest to clean, time consumming

  12. Sara says

My hardest tools to clean is baked on mess on pots and pans. I don’t own any “tools” so mine are really just the kitchen tools.

  13. Aimee C says

I make the hubby do the outside oily stuff so I can only complain about the indoors. My worst clean up is the vacuum, it gets hair in it and stops up. Crazy talk, I dont even have pets..its my hair!

  14. Michelle S says

The hardest tool I find the hardest to clean are the wrenches. My husband uses them a lot, rarely cleans them. Never thought of using Dawn.

  15. Steven Emma says

I work with different chemicals, so I’m always cleaning my tools. So hard getting in the tight spots like sockets.

  16. Brandi Goolsby says

My hardest “tool” to clean is my garlic press. Ugh. You have to scrape off the remaining garlic, and it’s hard to get all the little bits out. Then you have to soak it forever to get rid of the smell.
