This post is brought to you by Master Lock and Global Influence. My opinions are 100% honest and 100% mine.

Most people hear about the American Red Cross and their efforts after a disaster. I know that’s all I knew about the organization.

Until we had a fire.

That’s when two representatives from the American Red Cross showed up at my house, in the midst of the chaos with firemen and policemen and neighbors milling about. They arranged for accommodations at a local hotel for two nights and gave me a prepaid gift card to buy necessities and meals. I was in shock, and didn’t know which end was up…but here they were, handling my immediate needs, until I could get things situated with my insurance.

Master Lock House Fire

(this is NOT my house)

For me, the American Red Cross provided significant support at an extremely challenging time. Unfortunately there is another important impact from a disaster like a house fire…and the American Red Cross can’t help with that one.

That’s losing the things you love and care about. I wasn’t prepared for a fire — probably because I somehow thought that it would never happen to me — and I lost a lot. Almost everything, in fact. My kids’ schoolwork and projects and cards…photos…jewelry…mementos…you name it.

Clothing and shoes and stuff can be replaced. But the “stuff” you love and care about? If your stuff is vulnerable, then a fire — or a flood, or another disaster — will most likely destroy it. It did in my case. Believe me when I tell you that, in addition to all the distress that you experience because of a fire, the grief over losing those important possessions? It’s devastating.
