Freedom Road, by T.M. Souders ($10.99)
Summary of Freedom Road
A father’s selfish demands, broken booze bottles, and an unconscious mother are the fixtures in the daily life of 18-year-old Samantha Becker. Armed with her guitar and music to keep her comfort in a volatile world, Sam’s one dream to study classical guitar at Juilliard may very well be her salvation. But when her father’s careless actions lead to an “accident,” Sam’s ability to play the guitar dies along with her dreams of attending the renowned school. Sam then hides behind emotional barriers that have protected her for years, after having Losing all confidence in her future.
Just when Sam has given up, a budding friendship and an unexpected romance give her the hope she needs, forcing her to reevaluate all she’s ever known. With fresh conviction, Sam battles her father’s plans for her future, bandmates using her for personal gain, and a permanent injury. But will it be enough? Julliard auditions are almost here. Time’s running out, and Sam must re-learn to play the guitar or give up her dreams forever.
Freedom Road was a finalist in the USA Book Awards for Young Adult Fiction (2012) and a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Awards for Young Adult Fiction (2013) and was the second place/quarter-finalist in the Young Adult category of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards.
My review of Freedom Road
I don’t normally read Young Adult Fiction, but I am so, so happy that I chose to do so when I got the opportunity to read Freedom Road. What a joy — although I feel somewhat guilty saying so, considering the themes and the events of this novel. But I can say that because it was such a treat to read such a wonderfully crafted book that had such an impact on my heart.
The story of Freedom Road is real, and heart-wrenching yet heart-warming at the same time, and tells a powerful and meaningful story. I don’t know which I should tout more — the skillful story-telling of T.M. Souders or the story itself. Both are most certainly worthy of discussion and I’m so impressed with both, honestly. There are so many adjectives I can use to describe this book: Moving. Compelling. Inspiring. Engaging. Touching. Emotional. Hopeful.
I could go on (and on, probably)…but, the important fact is, I loved reading this book that was outside of my “wheelhouse,” as they say. I was grateful for the chance to read it, happy to have made it part of my repertoire, and appreciated the opportunity to become acquainted with T.M. Souders in such an intimate way. I think you will feel the same, if you open your heart — and your bookshelf — to Freedom Road. You will feel something; perhaps you can relate to Sam’s predicament, her home life, her struggle, her complicated relationships with the people in her life…or maybe the story itself will just tug at your heartstrings, making you feel — something — empathy, compassion, encouragement…it’s going to be different for everyone, I would imagine. But one thing remains the same — you will feel. And that’s about all you can ask of a novel. It is for me, anyway.
