Sleep Number: It sells itself

21 Flares 21 Flares ×

Let’s not kid ourselves. You’ve heard of Sleep Number. But you probably don’t a) know what it’s all about and b) know what YOUR number is.

I confess to not knowing either, until a few days ago, when I strolled into the Sleep Number store. Mattresses should not be “one size fits all,” yet somehow, somewhere, that became the industry standard. Sure, you could get a firm mattress or a plush mattress, but that’s about where it ends. In addition, the mattress you buy today might not be the best mattress for your needs in, say, five years. What if you injure your back? Or get pregnant? Or…well, you get the idea.

"Sleep Number Bed"

And then there’s Sleep Number. Each Sleep Number bed offers personalized comfort for whoever is in the bed — and for each side of the bed. It’s genius, really.

So, I strolled into the Sleep Number store and met Jim, who had me lie down on a Sleep Number bed so that we could discover what my number was. Up and down we went, from 100 to 0, then back up and back down, so I could really get a sense of what a firm mattress truly felt like vs. a really plush mattress. Believe it or not, when I first got on the bed, I commented about how comfortable it was…and that was at the firmest, or 100. So, right off the bat, I knew I was dealing with a better mattress than I’m dealing with at home. (This makes me sad.)

While Jim was adjusting the mattress from firm to plush and back and forth, it was utterly amazing how the mattress conformed to my body. Once you lie on a mattress that adjusts to you, there’s really no going back. (Except maybe to the store to buy the mattress.) Jim showed me the Individual Fit 3D imaging on a screen that showed how the mattress was adjusting to my exact zone of comfort to meet my needs. There were areas of red (mainly around my back and hips) that indicated too much pressure and then when we adjusted to my number, those red areas slowly turned to areas of green and blue, meaning that there was less pressure on those areas.

"Sleep Number Remote"

My number? 30. Soft and plush and comfy and heavenly and, well, you get the idea.

You know how you move around while you sleep? Toss and turn because you can’t get comfortable? Wake up because you’re crampy here and stiff there and just can’t find the right position to get you back to sleep? Not with a Sleep Number bed. Their patented design distributes your weight more evenly and reduces pressure points so you will sleep. Like sleep sleep, as in deep, restorative sleep that will have you waking up in the morning, feeling refreshed and energized to start your day.

Now, I have significant back issues, so sleeping can be an issue. Wait. Scratch that. It is an issue. Every stinkin’ night. Why? Because I’m sleeping on an innerspring mattress that doesn’t adjust to my needs. But if I were sleeping on a Sleep Number bed, those issues would be a thing of the past. And regardless of whether you have back issues or neck issues or any health issues at all, sleeping on a Sleep Number bed is going to feel better. Period.

"Sleep Number M7 Memory Foam Mattress"

Then I climbed aboard the Sleep Number m7 Memory Foam mattress. Sweet. Fancy. Moses. Now that mattress there, folks, is something special. Something mighty special.

The Sleep Number m7 Memory Foam mattress features three inches of CoolFit™ foam that has gel technology, providing you with a cool, soothing sleeping surface. Sound good to you? It sounds like a slice of heaven to me. This mattress is naturally contouring and more breathable when compared to the leading memory foam brand.

This is the bed I want. The bed I need, really. After all, each Sleep Number bed is clinically proven to relieve back pain and improve sleep quality. Isn’t that what we all want (and need)?

My buddy Jim was a great help, answering every question patiently, and explaining everything without trying to “sell” me, if that makes sense. You don’t want to make a major investment like a mattress while being hounded and harangued, as you might be in another mattress store. Not the case at Sleep Number. They don’t treat you like a “sale.” They treat you like someone who needs a break, someone who deserves a good night’s sleep. After all, the folks who work for Sleep Number don’t need to “sell” anything…because Sleep Number sells itself.

You just might want to check out Sleep Number on Facebook because you could win a Sleep Number bed!
