The dog days of summer are upon us (heck, they’ve been upon us for weeks now) and I thought I’d share some of Nutrisystem’s suggestions for staying cool and comfortable…and keeping your weight loss in gear.
Limit your time outdoors between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as much as possible. During that time, the sun is at its strongest and the humidity is at its highest. If your office or workplace is air-conditioned, pack your entire lunch (not just your Nutrisystem entrée!) before you head off to work in the morning so you don’t have to leave the building to pick up anything to add to it during the day. If you do go outside, make sure to wear light-colored clothing, which will reflect the sun’s radiation. Dark colors will attract the heat.
Drink a lot of water. If you’re on Nutrisystem, you should be doing this anyway. Water is to your body what a coolant system is to your car. Without water, your body lacks the fluids it needs to perspire and cool off (let alone keep your kidneys and liver working at peak levels so your body can burn fat.)
Try to drink at LEAST eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, or better yet, take your weight and divide it in half and drink that many ounces of water a day. Determining whether you are drinking enough water is simple — frequent trips to the bathroom are a good indicator that you are getting the fluids you need. Your urine should be light in color, almost clear. If you notice that your urine is darker than a pale yellow, increase your water intake.
Eat smaller meals and snacks throughout the day rather than just one large meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. These smaller eating times take less energy for the body to break down and, therefore, your body creates less metabolic heat while doing so.
Use your basement during a heat wave whenever possible. Basements are typically 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of the house naturally. Why not head downstairs for an ab workout, or to do some arm toning with hand weights? And when you’re through, kick back on the couch with a good book and give your body a break from the heat.
Drink a lot of caffeinated beverages or alcoholic beverages. Both types can cause dehydration and reverse the effects of water, especially during these hotter months. As always, if you do drink caffeine or alcohol, do so in moderation and try to limit to 1-2 servings, max. And, throw in an extra glass or two of water just to be on the safe side.
Overdo it. Sticking to your exercise routine is certainly important. In excessive heat, however, take the workout indoors to an air-conditioned studio. Most fitness center keep their air cranked during the hot summer days. Take advantage of it and get your exercise in while still keeping your cool!
And, for your yummy sweet potato pleasure, here’s a delicious and nutritious recipe.
Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Calorie-free pan spray, as needed
1 1/3 cups sweet potato or yam, peeled, cut into strips 1/2″x1/2″x3″
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg, ground
1/8 tsp. black pepper, as desired
Sugar substitute, as desired
1. Pre-heat oven to 400F.
2. Slice sweet potato or yam into long strips, similar to a french fry, and place in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes. Drain off water and pat dry. Spray potatoes with pan spray and toss to coat well.
3. Combine all spices together in a small bowl, along with sugar substitute if using, and mix well. Sprinkle over potatoes and toss to coat.
4. Place sweet potatoes in a single layer on a cookie sheet and bake 30 to 35 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender and are beginning to crisp slightly around the edges.
Of course, I don’t recommend dipping these yummy fries in Ranch dressing or anything, since ummmm, we’re trying to cut calories and fat, right? Right. Unless…you use fat-free Ranch. Then it would be OK, right? Hmmm…
OK, OK, it’s time for my results…
