Here are my Top Two Favorite Songs:

1. “Simple Man” (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

This song is very near and dear to my heart because it was the funeral song for my cousin. It is as though the words were written specifically for him (which a lot of people like to say about themselves, but in this case it’s quite true). “Simple Man” has been covered only a handful of times (which is, in my opinion, a handful too many, but I digress…), by Shinedown (probably the most popular version after the original) and Government Mule, to name a few. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s version of “Simple Man,” written by Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington, was released in 1973.
As the story goes, Van Zant and Rossington wrote the song (in about the span of an hour) following the death of his grandmother. Van Zant and his bandmates were hanging out at his apartment, telling stories about their mothers. In the words of Johnny Van Zant (in a 2010 CD commentary), “Well, that’s a great song and something that I think we all live by. I think anybody out there needs to respect their mother, and the words of their mother.” He also noted that “Simple Man” is always in their concert set — and it always gets a strong response from the fans. I don’t hear this song much on the radio but whenever there’s a jukebox nearby, you can rest assured that you’re going to hear it. At least once.

2. “Daughters” (John Mayer)

There’s nothing specifically special about this song, other than its magnificence.  This might not be my second favorite song ever, but off the top of my head, it’s the one I pick. It’s not like I’m pulling this one out of nowhere; after all, it did snag a Grammy for Mayer for Song of the Year in 2005. Believe it or not, Mayer did not want to release this song as a single, although the record label won out…and correctly so. I love this song. Every time I hear it, it’s moving.
Of course, if you ask me tomorrow or the next day, I might name another song as one of my Top Two Favorite Songs — but it doesn’t fluctuate much, or often.

Great choice of songs. I absolutely love Lynryd Skynrd, and of course the Van Zant Brothers, then throw 38 Special into the mix since the brothers are in the different bands.

Thanks for the follow, am following you back as well. Have a wonderful day.
